A country boy Raj (Raj Kapoor) arrives in Mumbai and is disappointed to find that honesty and integrity don't always lead to success. Instead, it seems that the more dishonest you are, the faster you'll climb the ladder of success. Eventually, Raj gets lured into the easy lifestyle, relying on his skills of deceit to pave a way for himself. But when Raj meets an upright woman who makes a meager living as a teacher (Nargis), he's overcome by his desire to impress her. Does Raj mend his ways for true love?
