Shyam (Rajesh Khanna) is an ambitious man who meets Rukmani (Tina Munim), the daughter of a millionaire, and they fall in love with each other. They get married despite staunch opposition from Rukmani's family. While Shyam wants to become a father, Rukmani is not thrilled with the idea of motherhood, and this causes problems between the couple. Rukmani even suspects Shyam of having an illicit relationship with Radha (Padmini Kolhapure), a librarian. Rukmani's stepmother and uncle, who have an eye on her wealth, further fuel the misunderstanding to the point of breaking their marriage. Will the couple rise above their differences?
